panipenem

Panipenem is a broad-spectrum, parenteral carbapenem antibiotic with activity against aerobic and anaerobic, gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including non-fermenters and beta-lactamase-producing species. It is typically administered intravenously in combination with betamipron, which inhibits renal uptake of panipenem to prevent nephrotoxicity. Panipenem acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It has demonstrated clinical efficacy in respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, surgical and gynecological infections in adults and pediatric patients. Panipenem is not used in the United States but is approved for use in Japan[1][2][4][5][6].
