Pantera (specifically the Pantera Lux) is a paclitaxel-eluting drug-coated balloon (DCB) catheter developed by Biotronik for use in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). It is designed to treat various coronary conditions, including in-stent restenosis (ISR), ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), and bifurcation lesions. The device features a balloon coated with paclitaxel at a concentration of 3 mcg/mm², utilizing butyryltri-n-hexyl citrate (BTHC) as a biocompatible excipient to facilitate drug transfer and local bioavailability. Paclitaxel functions as a microtubule-stabilizing antiproliferative agent, inhibiting the neointimal hyperplasia that typically leads to restenosis. Clinical studies, such as those sponsored by Diagram B.V., have evaluated its safety and efficacy as a pre-dilatation tool or primary treatment modality in complex coronary interventions.
