Overview

Pantethine is a naturally occurring compound derived from pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and consists of two molecules of pantetheine linked by a disulfide bridge. It acts as an intermediate in the endogenous synthesis of coenzyme A—a critical cofactor in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Pantethine is primarily used as a dietary supplement for lowering blood cholesterol and triglycerides (hyperlipidemia), with modest efficacy demonstrated in clinical trials. Its mechanism involves increasing concentrations of chemicals that lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides by supporting coenzyme A production in the liver[1][2][3][7]. In Japan and China, it is available as a prescription drug for hyperlipidemia[2]. It should not be confused with its precursor vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), which has different pharmacological properties.
