Overview
Pantoprazole is a first-generation proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat conditions involving excessive gastric acid production. Its primary indications include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Pantoprazole works by irreversibly binding to and inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme (the gastric proton pump) in the parietal cells of the stomach, thereby blocking the final step in gastric acid secretion. This inhibition leads to a significant and prolonged reduction in stomach acid production[1][2][3][4][6]. The drug is metabolized mainly by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 enzymes in the liver[6].
