Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pantothenic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin (vitamin B5) essential for human health. It is required for the synthesis of coenzyme A (CoA), which plays a central role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats by enabling acyl group transfer reactions. Through its incorporation into CoA and acyl carrier protein (ACP), pantothenic acid is critical for energy production via the tricarboxylic acid cycle and for fatty acid synthesis. It also supports acetylcholine synthesis and participates in cellular processes such as signal transduction and enzyme activation/deactivation through acylation and acetylation reactions. Pantothenic acid may help protect cells against peroxidative damage by increasing glutathione levels[1][4][6][8]. Deficiency is rare but can be treated with supplementation; it is commonly included in multivitamin products.
