PapacarieMBlue + PDT is a combination therapy used primarily in dentistry for the minimally invasive treatment of dental caries, especially in primary teeth. The product consists of PapacarieMBlue—a gel formulation containing papain (a proteolytic enzyme) and methylene blue (a photosensitizer)—combined with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT). The mechanism involves applying the gel to carious dentin to enzymatically soften and partially remove infected tissue. Methylene blue acts as a photosensitizer; when exposed to red light during PDT, it generates reactive oxygen species that have potent antimicrobial effects, further disinfecting the affected area without damaging healthy tissue. This approach aims to reduce bacterial load and preserve tooth structure while minimizing pulp exposure risk[5][6][8]. It is considered a conservative alternative to traditional mechanical removal of caries.
