Overview

Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), also known as 4-aminobenzoic acid, is a small molecule compound that serves as an intermediate in the bacterial synthesis of folate and was historically categorized as Vitamin Bx. In human medicine, it is primarily utilized in its salt form, aminobenzoate potassium (brand name Potaba), for the treatment of fibrotic skin disorders. Its therapeutic efficacy in conditions such as Peyronie's disease, scleroderma, and dermatomyositis is attributed to its ability to increase oxygen uptake at the tissue level and enhance monoamine oxidase activity, which helps to break down fibrosis-inducing biogenic amines. Additionally, PABA has a long history of use as a topical sunscreen agent due to its ability to absorb ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, although its use in this capacity has diminished due to potential staining and allergic reactions.
