Para-tyrosine (p-Tyr), the physiological isomer of the amino acid tyrosine, is being developed by the University of Pécs as an oral supplementation therapy for sepsis. In states of high oxidative stress, such as sepsis, non-physiological isomers meta-tyrosine and ortho-tyrosine are produced and can be incorporated into proteins, leading to cellular dysfunction and inflammatory damage. Para-tyrosine supplementation is hypothesized to competitively antagonize these oxidative stress markers, thereby mitigating inflammatory procedures and improving clinical outcomes. The therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT03278730) to assess its impact on organ failure, ICU stay duration, and 28-day survival in adult septic patients.
