Overview

Parabacteroides distasonis is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium that is a natural resident of the human gut microbiota. It is being developed as a next-generation probiotic or live biotherapeutic product (LBP) for various diseases. The bacterium itself is the active ingredient, exerting its effects by producing a range of metabolites, including nicotinic acid, succinate, and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These metabolites interact with host systems by targeting pathways such as the intestinal GPR109a receptor and PPARα signaling. Additionally, P. distasonis is recognized for its immunomodulatory properties; outer membrane vesicles (Pd-OMVs) derived from the bacterium are being explored as potential immunostimulants for cancer immunotherapy by modulating CXCL10 and CD8+ T cell responses. Research institutions are investigating its therapeutic potential in metabolic and gastrointestinal diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and various cancers.
