This standard care treatment refers to a multi-modal analgesic regimen utilized as the control arm in clinical research conducted by the Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center for patients with blunt thoracic trauma and lung contusion. The protocol is designed to manage pain and serve as a baseline therapy for evaluating the efficacy of experimental anti-inflammatory agents in preventing acute lung injury (ALI). The regimen consists of a combination of three active ingredients: paracetamol (acetaminophen), dipyrone (metamizole), and tramadol. Paracetamol and dipyrone provide non-opioid analgesia and antipyretic effects primarily through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes, while tramadol provides moderate-strength opioid analgesia via mu-opioid receptor agonism and the inhibition of serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake. This combination targets multiple pain pathways to optimize patient comfort following thoracic injury.
