Paraffin emollient refers to a group of topical preparations containing paraffin (liquid or soft) as the primary active ingredient. Paraffins are mixtures of saturated hydrocarbons derived from petroleum and are used as occlusive emollients in dermatology. They work by forming a protective film over the skin surface, which reduces transepidermal water loss and helps retain moisture in the stratum corneum. This action soothes dry, rough, scaly, or itchy skin and is commonly used for conditions such as eczema, ichthyosis, pruritus, and other forms of dermatitis. Paraffins are pharmacologically inactive but provide symptomatic relief by restoring the skin barrier function[1][2][5]. They may be found alone or combined with other moisturizing agents in creams and ointments.
