Paraffin emollient cream is a topical skin preparation containing a combination of liquid paraffin and white soft paraffin as its main active ingredients. It is used primarily as an occlusive moisturizer to treat or prevent dry, rough, scaly, or itchy skin conditions such as eczema, ichthyosis, pruritus of the elderly, and minor skin irritations. The mechanism of action involves forming an oily layer on the surface of the skin that traps water in the epidermis (outer layer), thereby reducing transepidermal water loss and maintaining hydration.
