Overview

Paramylon is a natural, linear β-1,3-D-glucan polysaccharide accumulated in crystalline form by the unicellular microalga *Euglena gracilis*, where it can constitute up to 30–70% of dry cell weight[1][3][4]. It acts as an *indigestible dietary fiber* and also exhibits immunomodulatory properties, including immunostimulation, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic effects. Paramylon is being investigated for health benefits such as suppression of chronic kidney disease progression (by reducing uremic toxin accumulation and renal inflammation), hepatoprotection, anti-allergy, antitumor activity, cholesterol lowering, antioxidant effects, and wound healing[1][2][3][4][5]. In animal models, it can attenuate kidney injury, moderate glucose and insulin responses, inhibit liver damage, suppress development of atopic dermatitis, and promote tissue healing. It is also used in aquaculture, as a feed additive to enhance immunity and mitigate stress. Mechanistically, paramylon's effects are attributed in part to its modulation of immune responses and gut microbiota, as well as inhibition of absorption of certain harmful metabolites and toxins[1][3][5].
