Paranit is a topical pediculicide used for the treatment of head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) and their eggs (nits). Unlike traditional chemical treatments that rely on neurotoxic pesticides, Paranit acts through a mechanical mechanism of action. The formulation typically contains a mixture of dimethicone (a silicone oil) and mineral oils (such as isoparaffin) which work by physically coating the lice and blocking their respiratory spiracles, leading to suffocation and death through dehydration. This physical mode of action is designed to prevent the development of resistance in lice populations. Paranit is available in various formulations, including sprays, lotions, and shampoos, and is often classified as a medical device in many jurisdictions due to its non-metabolic mechanism.
