Paraoxon is a highly potent organophosphate oxon and the active metabolite of the insecticide parathion. It functions as a parasympathomimetic drug by potently inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, leading to accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve synapses and neuromuscular junctions. This results in overstimulation followed by blockade of nerve transmission, which can cause severe neurotoxicity, seizures, and death. Paraoxon has been used as an ophthalmological agent for glaucoma but is now rarely used due to its high toxicity to humans and animals. It has also served as a research tool for studying acute and chronic effects of organophosphate poisoning[1][2][4][5].
