Parathyroid allotransplantation is a cell therapy technique developed by Prof. Dr. Erhan Aysan for the treatment of permanent hypoparathyroidism. The procedure involves the isolation of parathyroid cells from living or cadaveric donors, which are then prepared under sterile laboratory conditions and administered via a minimally invasive intramuscular injection, typically into the forearm. These transplanted cells function as a biological factory, secreting parathyroid hormone (PTH) to restore calcium and phosphorus homeostasis in patients whose own parathyroid glands are non-functional or have been surgically removed. Unlike traditional organ transplantation, this technique has been studied both with short-term immunosuppression and without any immunosuppression, aiming to provide a long-term solution to hypocalcemia without the need for lifelong oral calcium and vitamin D supplementation.
