Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Parathyroid extract is a historical preparation derived from animal parathyroid glands, used before the development of purified or recombinant parathyroid hormone for the treatment of hypoparathyroidism and resultant hypocalcemia. The extract contains a mixture of polypeptides, including parathyroid hormone and related peptides, and acts primarily by increasing blood calcium levels through effects on bone, kidney, and gut. Its use has been replaced by purified or recombinant parathyroid hormone therapies due to variable potency, risk of immunogenicity, and impurities.
