parathyroid hormone

Parathyroid hormone (PTH 1-84) is a recombinant form of the full-length 84-amino acid human parathyroid hormone. It acts as a bone-forming (anabolic) agent by binding to the parathyroid hormone 1 receptor (PTH1R). When administered as a once-daily subcutaneous injection, it stimulates osteoblast activity more than osteoclast activity, leading to an increase in bone mineral density and improved bone microarchitecture. Nycomed developed and marketed it under the brand name Preotact for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis to reduce the risk of vertebral fractures. Although it received marketing authorization in Europe, it was later withdrawn for commercial reasons.
