Overview

Parathyroid hormone-related protein 1-36 is one of several authentic secretory forms of PTHrP. It mimics the actions of parathyroid hormone (PTH) due to structural homology and ability to bind to and signal via the PTH/PTHrP receptor in bone and kidney. PTHrP 1-36 is equipotent to PTH 1-34, binding to the PTH/PTHrP receptor with equal affinity and activating the same intracellular signaling pathways with similar efficacy. The peptide has multiple biological effects including: - Reducing serum phosphorus and renal phosphorus threshold - Increasing fractional calcium excretion and nephrogenous cAMP excretion - Increasing plasma 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D - Enhancing beta cell function and proliferation in pancreatic islets - Acting as an anabolic skeletal agent with potential for treating osteoporosis PTHrP 1-36 was first identified as the PTH-like hypercalcemic factor responsible for most cases of humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM).
