Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This drug is a combination of two active pharmaceutical ingredients, parecoxib and propranolol. - **Parecoxib** is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used primarily for short-term management of perioperative pain. It is an injectable prodrug of valdecoxib, designed for intravenous or intramuscular administration when oral medications are not feasible. Parecoxib reduces pain by selectively inhibiting COX-2 enzyme activity, thereby decreasing prostaglandin synthesis involved in inflammation and pain signaling. - **Propranolol** is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist (beta-blocker) that blocks beta1-, beta2-, and to a lesser extent beta3-adrenoreceptors. It is widely used to treat cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, angina pectoris, atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarction prevention, migraine prophylaxis, essential tremor, hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, pheochromocytoma symptoms, and proliferating infantile hemangioma. Propranolol acts by blocking adrenergic receptors leading to decreased heart rate and contractility as well as inhibition of angiogenic factors like VEGF; it also has emerging evidence for anti-cancer effects through modulation of cellular proliferation and metastasis pathways. The combination may be considered in clinical contexts where both analgesia (via parecoxib) and cardiovascular or other indications requiring beta-blockade (via propranolol) are needed concurrently; however specific combined formulations or approvals are not standardly documented.
