Parentide (BCN-019) is a synthetic, long-acting peptide analogue of human glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) developed by Bcn Peptides S.A. It is primarily investigated for the treatment of Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS), a condition characterized by the inability to absorb sufficient nutrients due to a lack of functional small intestine. Parentide functions as a potent agonist of the glucagon-like peptide-2 receptor (GLP-2R), mimicking the trophic effects of endogenous GLP-2 on the intestinal mucosa. By activating GLP-2R, the drug stimulates crypt cell proliferation, inhibits enterocyte apoptosis, and increases villus height, thereby expanding the absorptive surface area of the gut. This pharmacological action aims to improve intestinal adaptation, enhance nutrient and fluid absorption, and potentially reduce the requirement for parenteral nutrition in patients with SBS. Parentide has received Orphan Drug Designation from the EMA and has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials.
