Overview

Parestat is a generic injectable formulation of parecoxib sodium, which serves as a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor and a prodrug of valdecoxib. It is primarily utilized for the short-term management of acute postoperative pain. Upon administration, Parestat is rapidly converted by enzymatic hydrolysis into valdecoxib, which then inhibits the COX-2 enzyme, blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins that mediate pain, fever, and inflammation. Because it selectively targets COX-2 over COX-1 at therapeutic concentrations, it provides effective analgesia with a reduced risk of the gastrointestinal and platelet-related side effects commonly associated with non-selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is typically administered via intravenous or intramuscular injection in a hospital setting.
