Overview

Pargeverine is a synthetic antispasmodic drug primarily used for the treatment of smooth muscle spasms in disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (such as irritable bowel syndrome), uterus, and gallbladder. It exhibits a dual mechanism of action by acting as an antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptor and modulating voltage-dependent calcium channel to reduce intracellular calcium levels. This leads to relaxation of smooth muscle and relief from colic pain or spasms. Clinical studies have shown its efficacy in treating moderate-to-severe colic pain of biliary origin and acute intestinal colic pain. Pargeverine may also interact with inflammatory pathways by modulating cytokines such as interleukin-1β[1][3][6].
