pargyline

Pargyline is a small molecule, irreversible and selective monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), with higher selectivity for the MAO-B isoform compared to MAO-A. It was primarily developed and marketed as an antihypertensive agent under the brand name Eutonyl. Pargyline works by inhibiting the oxidative deamination of catecholamines such as norepinephrine and dopamine within presynaptic nerve terminals, thereby increasing their synaptic availability. This mechanism leads to its antihypertensive effects, but also shares pharmacological properties with antidepressant MAOIs, although it was not approved for depression treatment. The drug is associated with side effects typical of MAOIs, including orthostatic hypotension[1][2][3][4][5].
