Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pariet S is an over-the-counter (OTC) proton pump inhibitor (PPI) developed by Eisai Co., Ltd. for the Japanese market. It contains rabeprazole sodium, a small molecule that inhibits the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme (the proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells, thereby suppressing stomach acid production. Originally developed as a prescription medication (Pariet), Pariet S was approved in Japan as an RX-to-OTC switch for the relief of stomach pain, heartburn, and bloating. It is designed as a small, easy-to-swallow tablet for once-daily administration, providing 24-hour acid suppression. It represents the first OTC proton pump inhibitor available in Japan.
