Overview

Parkinsonia florida pollen, derived from the Blue Palo Verde tree native to the Southwestern United States, is utilized in clinical allergology as an allergenic extract. It is primarily indicated for the diagnosis of type I hypersensitivity through skin prick testing and for allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) to treat allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and seasonal asthma. The extract contains various proteins that act as allergens; in sensitized individuals, these proteins cross-link allergen-specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) on the surface of mast cells and basophils, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine. In the context of immunotherapy, repeated administration of increasing doses of the extract induces peripheral T-cell tolerance and promotes the production of IgG4 "blocking" antibodies, shifting the immune profile away from an allergen-specific Th2 response toward a Th1 or regulatory T-cell (Treg) mediated response.
