paromomycin

Paromomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by various Streptomyces species. It is primarily used to treat acute and chronic intestinal amebiasis, as well as other intestinal parasitic infections such as giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, and tapeworm infections. It is also used as adjunctive therapy in the management of hepatic coma due to its ability to reduce ammonia-producing gut bacteria. The drug acts by binding to the 16S rRNA of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to cell death in susceptible organisms. It has poor oral absorption, so its effects are largely confined to the gastrointestinal tract[1][2][3][6].
