Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. It works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, thereby increasing serotonin levels and improving mood and anxiety symptoms. Paroxetine is primarily indicated for major depressive disorder but is also approved for panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and vasomotor symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes. It was first approved in the United States in 1992 and has since become widely prescribed globally[2][4][5][6][7]. Paroxetine is known for its high selectivity and potency among SSRIs but may be associated with withdrawal effects upon discontinuation[5].
