Overview

A partially demineralized dentin block is an autologous bone graft substitute prepared from a patient's own extracted teeth. The process involves cleaning and grinding the tooth (primarily the dentin) and then subjecting it to partial demineralization, often using a specialized device like the Tooth Transformer. This processing exposes the organic matrix, including Type I collagen and endogenous growth factors such as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), which are otherwise sequestered in the mineralized tissue. In clinical applications for alveolar ridge preservation, the processed dentin is typically mixed with leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) to form a cohesive "block" or mass. This material provides an osteoconductive scaffold and osteoinductive signals to promote new bone formation and maintain hard tissue volume in extraction sockets prior to dental implant placement.
