Overview

Partially HLA-matched SARS-CoVSTs are an investigational cell therapy product consisting of ex-vivo expanded, polyclonal (CD4+ and CD8+) T cells that are specific for multiple antigens of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. These T cells are derived from the peripheral blood of convalescent or unexposed healthy donors and selected to be partially matched at human leukocyte antigen (HLA) loci with recipients. The therapy is designed as an "off-the-shelf" product, allowing rapid administration to patients with severe or refractory COVID-19 who may not respond to standard treatments. The mechanism involves direct cytotoxic activity against infected host cells via recognition of viral peptides presented by MHC molecules on target cells, thereby enhancing viral clearance and immune response in immunocompromised or high-risk patients. Clinical studies have focused on safety (including risk of graft-versus-host disease) and efficacy in reducing progression to mechanical ventilation in hospitalized COVID-19 patients[1][2][4].
