Overview

Partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) is a water-soluble dietary fiber derived from the seeds of the guar plant (*Cyamopsis tetragonolobus*). It is produced through controlled enzymatic hydrolysis of native guar gum, which reduces its molecular weight and viscosity, making it more suitable for clinical and dietary applications without the high thickening effect of the original polysaccharide. PHGG acts as a prebiotic, undergoing fermentation by gut microbiota to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate, propionate, and acetate. It is primarily indicated for the management of gastrointestinal disorders, including chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Emerging research suggests that PHGG may also modulate the gut-immune axis, potentially influencing systemic conditions like metabolic syndrome and certain cancers by regulating T-cell function and activating SCFA receptors such as FFAR2 and FFAR3.
