Pascopyrum smithii pollen allergen extract, derived from Western Wheatgrass, is a biological product used for both the diagnosis and treatment of allergies to this specific grass pollen. As a form of allergen-specific immunotherapy, it works by gradually exposing the body to the allergenic proteins found in the pollen. This process aims to desensitize the immune system, shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated allergic reaction to a state of tolerance, which involves the induction of regulatory T-cells and the production of blocking IgG antibodies. This modulation of the immune system leads to a reduction or elimination of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis (hay fever), allergic conjunctivitis, and allergic asthma upon natural exposure to the pollen. Treatment can be administered through subcutaneous injections (allergy shots) or as sublingual drops/tablets.
