Overview

Paspalum notatum pollen is a biological allergen extract derived from the pollen of Paspalum notatum, commonly known as Bahia grass. This grass pollen is a significant cause of type I hypersensitivity reactions, such as allergic rhinitis and other respiratory allergies, particularly in subtropical regions like the southeastern United States. [1, 8] The extract contains several allergenic proteins that elicit skin-test-positive reactions in sensitized individuals. [1] It is used for both the diagnosis of Bahia grass pollen allergy through skin testing (percutaneous or intradermal) and for treatment via allergen immunotherapy (subcutaneous injections). [2] The diagnostic use relies on the extract's ability to trigger a localized allergic reaction (wheal and flare) upon introduction into the skin of a sensitized person. [2] Allergen immunotherapy involves administering gradually increasing doses of the extract to induce immunological tolerance and reduce the severity of allergic symptoms upon natural exposure. [15] Multiple companies, including Hollister-Stier Labs, LLC, ALK-Abello, Inc., and Greer Laboratories, Inc., manufacture and supply this allergenic extract. [10]
