Overview

Passiflora incarnata, commonly known as passion flower or maypop, is a plant extract used in herbal medicine primarily for its calming (anxiolytic) and sedative effects. [4, 17] It is traditionally used to treat anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, and restlessness. [1, 4] The therapeutic properties are attributed to its rich content of active compounds, including flavonoids (like vitexin, isovitexin, and chrysin) and alkaloids. [3, 20] The primary mechanism of action is believed to be the modulation of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system in the brain. [1, 2, 7] Specifically, it has shown an affinity for both GABA-A and GABA-B receptors and inhibits GABA uptake, which enhances the inhibitory effects of GABA, leading to a reduction in anxiety and promoting relaxation. [1, 29] Beyond its effects on the GABA system, research also suggests it may engage opioidergic, cholinergic, and monoaminergic pathways. [22] It is marketed as both a dietary supplement and, in some regions like Europe, as a registered herbal medicinal product. [31] Clinical studies have shown its potential in reducing pre-operative anxiety, improving sleep quality, and managing symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, with some studies suggesting comparable efficacy to conventional anxiolytic drugs but with fewer side effects like cognitive impairment.
