Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Passiflora incarnata extract is a botanical preparation derived from the passionflower plant, commonly used as a dietary supplement and investigated for its medicinal properties. It is traditionally used for its calming effects to treat anxiety, agitation, and insomnia. The proposed mechanism for these anxiolytic and sedative effects involves the modulation of the GABAergic system; active compounds such as flavonoids are thought to enhance the activity of GABA-A receptors. Some research also suggests the extract itself contains GABA. Clinically, it is being investigated in a Phase II trial for its potential as an anticonvulsant in patients with partial epilepsy. Beyond neurological applications, preclinical research has demonstrated the anticancer potential of the extract and its nanoformulations. In cancer models, it has been shown to induce apoptosis by upregulating the p53 tumor suppressor gene and activating caspases.
