Overview
Pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila is a non-viable, heat-treated form of the beneficial gut bacterium *Akkermansia muciniphila*. It is classified as a postbiotic or next-generation probiotic and is being investigated as both a pharmaceutical agent and a dietary supplement. The pasteurization process inactivates the bacteria but preserves key bioactive components, such as the outer membrane protein Amuc_1100, which are believed to be responsible for its therapeutic effects. These effects include strengthening the gut barrier, reducing inflammation, and improving metabolic health. [1, 4] Clinical and preclinical studies are exploring its potential in managing metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). [5] Several companies, including A-Mansia Biotech and Leeuwenhoek Laboratories, are developing it as a therapeutic, while The Akkermansia Company markets it as a dietary supplement for gut health and weight management. [3, 11]
