Overview

Pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila LWHK0003 (also known as NTUH_Amuc03) is a microbial therapeutic developed by Leeuwenhoek Laboratories Co. Ltd. for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Unlike live probiotics, this formulation consists of heat-killed (pasteurized) bacteria, which preserves key structural components such as the Amuc_1100 outer membrane protein. Its mechanism of action involves strengthening the intestinal barrier and modulating the gut-liver axis to reduce the translocation of pro-inflammatory pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and microbiota-derived metabolites (MDMs) from the gut to the liver. Preclinical studies in mice have demonstrated that LWHK0003 can attenuate fatty liver progression, reduce body weight, improve dyslipidemia, and enhance insulin sensitivity (HOMA-IR). It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials to assess its safety and efficacy in individuals with MASLD.
