PastoCovac is a protein subunit conjugate vaccine developed for the prevention of COVID-19 through a collaboration between the Finlay Institute of Vaccines in Cuba and the Pasteur Institute of Iran. The vaccine is based on a recombinant version of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein's receptor-binding domain (RBD), which is chemically conjugated to a tetanus toxoid carrier protein and adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide. This conjugation strategy is designed to enhance the immunogenicity of the RBD antigen by recruiting T-cell help, thereby stimulating a more robust and durable immune response compared to the antigen alone. It is typically administered as a two-dose primary series, often followed by a booster dose of a related vaccine, such as PastoCovac Plus (Soberana Plus), to maintain high levels of neutralizing antibodies.
