Overview

Pathogen-reduced cryoprecipitate is a blood product derived from plasma that has undergone a validated pathogen reduction process to inactivate or remove viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens. It serves as an enriched source of fibrinogen, factor VIII, von Willebrand factor (vWF), and factor XIII. The primary mechanism involves providing these clotting factors to patients with acquired or congenital deficiencies—most notably for the treatment and control of bleeding associated with hypofibrinogenemia (low fibrinogen levels), massive hemorrhage (such as trauma or obstetric bleeding), dysfibrinogenemia, von Willebrand disease when specific concentrates are unavailable, and uremic bleeding after failure of other treatments[1][3][4][5]. The INTERCEPT Blood System is one method used for pathogen reduction; it utilizes amotosalen (a psoralen compound) combined with ultraviolet A light to crosslink nucleic acids in pathogens and leukocytes before removal by adsorption[1][4]. This process significantly reduces the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections while maintaining the functional activity of key coagulation proteins[1][8]. Pathogen-reduced cryoprecipitate can be stored at room temperature post-thaw for up to 5–10 days depending on local regulations and retains its hemostatic efficacy during this period[8]. It is recommended by guidelines when specific clotting factor concentrates are not available or feasible.
