Pathogen-reduced platelets are a biologic blood product consisting of platelet concentrates that have undergone treatment with pathogen reduction technology (PRT) to inactivate potential viral, bacterial, and protozoal contaminants. This specific intervention is being evaluated by Weill Medical College of Cornell University for its hemostatic efficacy in pediatric patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery, a population at high risk for post-operative hemorrhage. The PRT process typically utilizes a photosensitizing agent (such as amotosalen or riboflavin) combined with ultraviolet light to induce irreversible cross-linking of nucleic acids, preventing the replication of pathogens and donor leukocytes. The primary clinical objective is to provide effective clot formation and bleeding control while minimizing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections and transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease.
