Overview

Patrinia villosa water extract (PVW) is an aqueous extract derived from the medicinal herb *Patrinia villosa* (Thunb.) Dufr., which has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for treating intestinal disorders. The extract contains various bioactive compounds, including 8,9-didehydro-7-hydroxydolichodial (DHD), a heat-generated compound formed during thermal hydrolysis. Research in preclinical models of colorectal cancer has demonstrated that PVW exhibits anti-tumor effects by inhibiting cell viability and migration, primarily through the upregulation of tumor suppressor proteins p53 and PTEN. Additionally, the extract has shown pro-angiogenic activity via the activation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK). Studies also suggest that PVW can enhance the efficacy of the FOLFOX chemotherapy regimen (5-fluorouracil, folinic acid, and oxaliplatin) in colon cancer models without interfering with the metabolism of the chemotherapy components.
