Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Patryl is a brand of metronidazole, a nitroimidazole derivative with potent activity against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa. Developed and marketed by Nutramedica Inc., it functions as a prodrug that is selectively activated within anaerobic microorganisms by the enzyme nitroreductase. This activation generates reactive intermediate metabolites that interact with microbial DNA, causing strand breakage and inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis, ultimately leading to cell death. Patryl is available in multiple formulations, including intravenous/intramuscular injections, oral tablets, and a pediatric suspension, and is indicated for the treatment of infections such as trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amoebic dysentery, and various anaerobic bacterial infections.
