Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Paxceed is a micellar formulation of paclitaxel developed by Angiotech Pharmaceuticals specifically for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It utilizes a polymeric micelle delivery system composed of PEG2000-b-PDLLA1333 to encapsulate paclitaxel, a small molecule microtubule stabilizer. This nanotechnology-based formulation was designed to avoid the hypersensitivity reactions associated with the Cremophor EL vehicle used in traditional oncology-grade paclitaxel (Taxol), making it more suitable for patients with immune-mediated diseases. In RA, Paxceed aims to inhibit the aggressive proliferation of synovial cells and the formation of pannus, which are key drivers of joint destruction. The drug reached Phase 2 clinical trials for patients with active RA who had failed standard disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), though development was subsequently terminated.
