Overview

PBR-001 is an autologous cell therapy product consisting of a sheet of iris pigment epithelial (IPE) cells. Developed by PharmaBio Corporation, it is designed for the treatment of myopic chorioretinal atrophy, a severe complication of pathologic myopia characterized by the degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptors. The therapeutic approach involves harvesting a small sample of the patient's own iris tissue, culturing the IPE cells into a scaffold-free cell sheet, and then surgically transplanting this sheet into the subretinal space. Because IPE cells share a common embryological origin with RPE cells and possess similar functional properties, the transplanted sheet is intended to serve as a functional replacement for damaged RPE, thereby stabilizing visual function and preventing further macular atrophy.
