PBSC-M87o is an investigational gene-modified cell therapy developed by the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. It consists of autologous (or allogeneic) CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor/stem cells that have been transduced with the M87o lentiviral vector. This vector encodes an anti-HIV gene construct designed to confer resistance to HIV infection in the engrafted stem cells and their differentiated progeny. The therapy was primarily evaluated in HIV-positive patients with hematologic malignancies, such as AIDS-related lymphoma, who required hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In clinical trials, these modified cells were used as a rescue treatment following high-dose chemotherapy to provide a source of HIV-resistant immune cells, aiming to assess safety, toxicity, and potential anti-tumor and anti-HIV effects.
