PBTDG is a novel gold(I) complex (PF6{(BDPEA)(TPPMS) digold(I)}) evaluated for its anticancer activity, notably in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Its mechanism of action is characterized by disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, induction of apoptosis, ATP depletion, and robust generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). PBTDG demonstrates potent cytotoxicity at low micromolar concentrations, with greater efficacy than sorafenib in the tested breast cancer cell model. The compound's antitumor effects are attributed to mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress induction, typical of some gold(I) complexes, which have been shown to inhibit mitochondrial function and enzymes essential for cellular redox balance such as thioredoxin reductase. Further preclinical studies, especially in animal models, are warranted to assess its therapeutic potential and safety profile[1][2][3][6].
