Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PC-0109 is an inhaled liposomal formulation of the small molecule pirfenidone, currently under development by Changtai Pharmaceutical (also known as PharmaMax Corp) for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Pirfenidone is an established anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory agent that works by inhibiting the production of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), a key mediator in the fibrotic process, and reducing inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha. By utilizing a liposome-based delivery system administered via nebulization, PC-0109 is designed to deliver the therapeutic agent directly to the lung parenchyma. This localized delivery approach aims to achieve higher drug concentrations at the site of disease while significantly reducing systemic exposure, thereby potentially mitigating the gastrointestinal and dermatological side effects commonly associated with oral pirfenidone therapy.
