Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PCRX301 is an extended-release, non-opioid analgesic candidate consisting of funapide (formerly XEN402) formulated in a thermosensitive hydrogel. Funapide is a small molecule inhibitor of the voltage-gated sodium channel Nav1.7 (encoded by the SCN9A gene), which is primarily expressed in peripheral sensory neurons and plays a critical role in pain signaling. The hydrogel formulation is designed to provide sustained local release of the drug at the surgical site, potentially offering long-lasting relief from acute post-operative pain while minimizing systemic exposure. Originally discovered by Xenon Pharmaceuticals, the asset was licensed to Flexion Therapeutics and subsequently acquired by Pacira BioSciences. It is currently in early-stage clinical development for indications such as post-surgical pain following bunionectomy.
