Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PD-1-directed CAR T cells are chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells engineered to target and deplete pathogenic PD-1-expressing T cells, specifically PD-1⁺ CD4⁺ T follicular helper-like cells. Developed by researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Tel Aviv University, and Rabin Medical Center, these CAR T cells are designed to treat neuroinflammatory and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In armored versions, the CAR T cells are engineered to locally release interleukin-10 (IL-10) or soluble TNF receptor II (sTNFRII) at inflammatory sites, which helps attenuate inflammation, reprogram the local immune microenvironment, and promote tissue repair.
