Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PD-protec is a novel peritoneal dialysis solution that incorporates the dipeptide alanyl-glutamine as a cytoprotective additive to improve the biocompatibility of dialysis fluid and preserve peritoneal membrane integrity in patients with chronic kidney failure undergoing peritoneal dialysis.[5][4][1] By supplying alanyl-glutamine, PD-protec is intended to enhance cellular stress responses (including heat shock protein expression) and support mesothelial cell survival, thereby mitigating peritoneal damage, inflammation, and systemic side effects associated with conventional glucose-based peritoneal dialysis fluids.[3][5][4] Developed by Zytoprotec, the product has received FDA orphan drug designation for peritoneal dialysis and has progressed through phase 2 and into phase 3 clinical evaluation in the US and Europe to assess its safety and efficacy in reducing PD-related complications and prolonging the usability of the peritoneal membrane.[5][2][7][8]
